Hungary Expels Russian Diplomats Over Alleged Diplomatic Misconduct
(MENAFN) Hungary has ordered 10 Russian diplomats to leave the country over activities considered inconsistent with their diplomatic responsibilities, Foreign Minister Anita Orban announced Tuesday.
The diplomats “had engaged in activities in Hungary that are unacceptable for diplomats under the Vienna Convention,” Orban said, without revealing specific details about the conduct that prompted the decision.
“The decision protects the security and sovereignty of Hungary,” she added.
Despite the expulsions, Orban emphasized that Hungary was not severing diplomatic relations with Russia. She said Budapest would continue essential communication with Moscow while maintaining mutual respect and observing established diplomatic rules.
The minister did not identify the diplomats or disclose their specific roles, nor did she elaborate on the activities that led to their expulsion.
The move represents a change in Hungary’s approach toward Russia under Prime Minister Peter Magyar’s government, which took office in May.
That same month, Budapest expelled another Russian diplomat after accusing him of conducting intelligence activities while operating under diplomatic protection.
Hungary also summoned Russian Ambassador Evgeny Stanislavov in May following Russian drone attacks in Ukraine’s western Zakarpattia region, where a significant Hungarian ethnic community resides.
“I told the Russian ambassador that it was completely unacceptable for Hungary that they were now attacking Transcarpathia,” she said at the time.
Orban also called on Moscow to pursue “an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful and lasting end to the (Ukraine) war as soon as possible.”
