Israeli Forces Enforce Curfew, Arrests in Anata, Shuafat
(MENAFN) Israeli forces have placed the town of Anata and Shuafat refugee camp in occupied East Jerusalem under a strict military siege since early Tuesday, conducting raids, detaining Palestinians and searching homes, businesses and other properties, according to Palestinian authorities.
The Jerusalem Governorate said Israeli forces sealed roads connecting Anata and Shuafat to surrounding areas from the early morning hours, restricting Palestinians from entering or leaving.
The closures and curfew led schools and kindergartens in both areas to suspend activities. Business owners were also prevented from opening their shops, bringing much of the local economy and normal daily activity to a standstill for an estimated 80,000 Palestinians.
According to the governorate, Israeli forces have launched a widespread detention campaign, with around 100 Palestinians reportedly taken into custody, including one woman. Raids and on-site interrogations were continuing.
Dozens of residential properties in Anata and Shuafat were searched, with residents questioned by Israeli forces. Several commercial and private facilities were also entered, while doors were reportedly forced open at some locations and property inside was damaged.
Israeli troops continued to maintain positions throughout neighborhoods and along major roads, while stringent military controls remained in place at the Shuafat checkpoint.
Local residents said people were sometimes permitted to enter the affected areas but were prevented from leaving. The restrictions left dozens of Palestinians stuck in their vehicles for hours overnight because they could not reach their homes, while others were stranded outside the two areas after access roads were shut.
The Jerusalem Governorate also reported that ambulance teams were being blocked from reaching patients and emergency situations, raising concerns over the potential impact on residents requiring urgent medical assistance.
It denounced the restrictions and ongoing siege as a “dangerous escalation” and “collective punishment,” warning that the measures were affecting the daily lives and fundamental rights of tens of thousands of Palestinians.
The Israeli military said Monday that it had begun what it described as a “focused” operation in Anata and Shuafat, but did not provide a timetable for its conclusion.
The governorate compared the latest raids with an Israeli military operation conducted in Qalandia refugee camp in early August, accusing Israel of applying collective punishment against Palestinian communities surrounding Jerusalem.
The latest escalation comes as violence continues to increase across the occupied Palestinian territories. UN figures indicate that attacks by Israeli occupiers have reached “unprecedented levels,” with more than 1,400 incidents involving casualties or damage to property recorded during 2026.
Approximately 750,000 Israeli occupiers reside across 516 illegal settlements and outposts in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
