German Police Arrest Suspect Over Series of Power Grid Sabotage Attempts
(MENAFN) German police have detained a man in the western part of the country over a series of suspected sabotage operations targeting electricity substations, according to reports on Tuesday.
The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Daniel V., was reportedly taken into custody during a traffic stop near Weisweiler, close to Aachen in northwestern Germany.
Authorities had been searching for him for several days following attacks involving homemade devices aimed at substations supplying brown coal-fired power plants.
Police discovered several of the improvised launch mechanisms near the Weisweiler power station on Monday evening. Investigators said the devices matched those used in previous incidents and were designed to propel thin wires across high-voltage power lines, potentially causing electrical short circuits.
Comparable devices were also discovered last week in Brandenburg, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony. The first confirmed incidents occurred on Sept. 1 at substations supporting the Jaenschwalde lignite power plant in eastern Germany and at facilities near Bergheim, west of Cologne.
German media outlets received letters claiming responsibility for the attacks last week. The messages were signed using the suspect’s full name, with the writer claiming to have acted independently and insisting that left-wing organizations and activists “had nothing to do with it.”
“Electricity generation from fossil fuels is a crime that brings unspeakable suffering,” one letter said. “Because the media don’t do a damn thing to convey the urgency of the situation and the state does not intervene to avert this suffering, I have to do it now.”
In another section, the writer stated: “I am not attacking the country but the fossil fuel industry, even if for some politicians that is the same thing.” He also said he was “pleased that there were no power outages and yet coal-fired power plant units went offline.”
The writer further said he would “not be sad” if Germany’s arms industry experienced power disruptions, “particularly as long as Germany supports the genocide in Palestine.”
