South Korean President Renews Dialogue Push for Peaceful Coexistence With North Korea

(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Tuesday renewed his appeal for dialogue with North Korea, saying peaceful coexistence and shared prosperity on the Korean Peninsula should be pursued alongside strong deterrence.

Speaking in a video message during the opening of the Seoul Defense Dialogue, Lee highlighted the importance of strengthening security cooperation as countries face increasingly complicated and unprecedented challenges in the global security environment.

"We will unwaveringly continue efforts to achieve peaceful coexistence and shared prosperity on the Korean Peninsula through trust and dialogue based on firm deterrence," Lee said.

The Korean Peninsula has remained divided since the Korean War in the 1950s. The conflict ended with an armistice rather than a formal peace treaty, meaning the two Koreas technically remain at war.

Lee said Seoul is also seeking to create more opportunities for discussions focused on peace and prosperity, supported by mutual respect, cooperation and the country's independent defense capabilities.

"Confrontations and armed conflicts between countries are continuing across the world while the global nuclear nonproliferation regime that has underpinned global peace for decades is also being seriously undermined," he added.

Lee called for a new approach to international security cooperation centered on "strong deterrence, international norms and shared resilience," arguing that the growing challenges cannot be tackled by individual countries acting alone.

He also pointed to the rapid development of technologies such as artificial intelligence, warning that these advances are creating new and "unpredictable" security threats.
