Landslides Kill Six, Leave Nine Missing After Heavy Rains in China
(MENAFN) At least six people have died and nine others remain unaccounted for after multiple mudslides and landslides hit Jiangxi province in eastern China following several days of intense rainfall.
Five fatalities and seven missing people were reported in Mingkeng village in Suichuan County by Tuesday afternoon. In other parts of the county, landslides in Zuo'an and Tanghu townships claimed another life and left two people missing.
Rescue teams continued searching for those unaccounted for while authorities worked to repair damaged roads, strengthen vulnerable areas and reduce the risk of further disasters.
The landslides came after Typhoon Saudel brought several days of heavy rain to eastern and southeastern parts of China, causing widespread flooding and triggering additional slope failures.
Saudel first struck Zhejiang province on Aug. 28 before making a second landfall in neighboring Fujian province on Sept. 3 as a tropical storm.
Fujian also experienced severe weather, with several people still missing after torrential rainfall caused flooding and other weather-related disasters in Putian city’s Chengxiang district.
In Huating town, the heavy rain triggered further damage, causing more than 100 homes to collapse.
Authorities in Suichuan had previously moved more than 5,300 residents from areas considered at risk, while hundreds of emergency workers were sent to assist with rescue and relief operations.
