American Family of Four Missing After Plane Disappears Near Bahamas
(MENAFN) A small aircraft carrying four members of an American family disappeared while traveling from the Bahamas toward Florida, triggering a search operation by local and US authorities.
The five-seat Piper PA-34 took off from Great Harbour Cay on Monday, bound for Opa-locka in Florida. Authorities said air traffic controllers lost communication with the aircraft roughly 13 miles (21 kilometers) west of Andros Island, the largest island in the Bahamas.
Family member Silvi Larrieu identified those aboard as Mario Lamar, his wife Lili Lamar, and their two grandchildren, Christian Sosa and Sofi Sosa. “On the flight this morning was my uncle Mario Lamar, his wife Lili Lamar and two of his grandchildren, Christian Sosa and Sofi Sosa,” she told CNN.
Authorities began searching after receiving information that “an aircraft may have gone down in the waters off Red Bays,” a community located in the northwestern part of Andros Island.
Flight-tracking data indicated that the aircraft, registered under the tail number N212ML, appeared to make circles near the Bahamian coastline before disappearing from tracking systems. Severe thunderstorms were affecting the region around the same time, though authorities have not determined whether the weather played a role in the aircraft’s disappearance.
The US Coast Guard joined the search effort alongside the Royal Bahamas Defense Force, focusing on an area approximately 15 miles (24 kilometers) from Andros Island. An HC-144 Ocean Sentry surveillance aircraft was also sent to assist with the operation.
Poor weather conditions prevented the initial search from proceeding as planned, with authorities expected to continue the operation once conditions became safer.
Police said, “Efforts to locate the aircraft and its occupants remain a priority.”
