Iran: US Compliance With Islamabad Pact Could Ease Regional Tensions
(MENAFN) Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tuesday that Washington’s return to its obligations under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding could help reduce tensions across the region.
Araghchi made the remarks during a telephone conversation with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, during which the two officials reviewed bilateral ties along with recent regional and international developments.
The Iranian minister attributed the ongoing regional tensions to what he described as the US failure to honor its commitments under the Islamabad memorandum.
“The solution is simple. The US side’s return to and compliance with its commitments and signature under the Islamabad memorandum will pave the way for a return to normal conditions,” he said.
Araghchi also updated Motegi on recent discussions between Iran and Oman concerning the Strait of Hormuz.
He said Tehran and Muscat had achieved “significant progress” toward an agreement on a temporary transit route through the strategic waterway, while consultations were continuing over arrangements for managing the route in the future.
