Russia Threatens Harsh Response After Hungary Expels Ten Diplomats

(MENAFN) Russia warned Tuesday that it would take retaliatory measures after Hungary expelled 10 Russian diplomats, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"The response to the Russophobic lobby in Budapest will be harsh and painful," ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told the state-run news agency Tass.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orban announced Monday that Budapest had ordered the diplomats to leave after determining that their activities were incompatible with their diplomatic roles. She said the decision was intended to safeguard Hungary’s security and sovereignty.

Orban stressed that the expulsions would not result in a break in diplomatic relations with Moscow, adding that Hungary intended to continue engaging with Russia.

The latest move follows Hungary’s expulsion of a Russian diplomat in May over allegations of intelligence-gathering activities.

That same month, Orban summoned Russian Ambassador Evgeny Stanislavov after Russian drones struck Ukraine’s western Zakarpattia region, which has a significant ethnic Hungarian population.
