UN Commission Condemns Israeli Attacks on Southern Syria

(MENAFN) The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria on Tuesday voiced “deep concern” over Israel’s continued military actions in southern Syria, saying they violate the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and “must stop.”

The commission issued the remarks during a briefing before the UN Human Rights Council, which opened its 63rd regular session in Geneva on Monday and is scheduled to continue until Oct. 7.

“We are deeply concerned about the Israeli attacks on southern Syria and affirm that they constitute a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the commission said.

“This is unacceptable and must stop,” it added.

Southern Syrian provinces, particularly Quneitra and Daraa, have experienced repeated Israeli military activity, including raids on residential areas, the establishment of checkpoints, arrests and artillery fire.

Israel has maintained control over most of Syria’s Golan Heights since 1967.

After the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government on Dec. 8, 2024, Israel said the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement was no longer in effect. Israeli forces subsequently entered the demilitarized buffer zone and seized additional positions, including the Syrian side of Mount Hermon, also known as Jabal al-Sheikh.

Regarding Syria’s internal situation, the commission reported faster progress in reconstruction efforts and the development of institutions focused on accountability.

It emphasized that “accountability is an essential element for the success of the transitional justice process in Syria.”

The commission also welcomed the extension of its mandate and expressed appreciation to the Syrian government for facilitating its operations.

The UN Human Rights Council created the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria in August 2011 to investigate alleged violations of international human rights law committed since March of that year and, where possible, determine those responsible.

For years, the commission carried out its investigations from outside Syria because it did not have access to the country. Its work relied on testimonies from victims and witnesses, alongside documents, photographs, videos and satellite imagery.
