Kashmir's Big Screen Moment: IFFJK Takes Off In Srinagar

Srinagar- Jammu and Kashmir's longstanding association with cinema entered a new chapter on Monday as the first International Film Festival of Jammu and Kashmir (IFFJK) opened in Srinagar, bringing filmmakers, actors, directors and cinema professionals together for a four-day celebration of films and culture.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the festival at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC), marking the formal opening of the maiden edition being held from September 7 to 10 under the theme“Rang-e-Cinema.”

The festival is being organised by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) in collaboration with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC).

The inaugural edition features 135 films from 41 countries, covering feature films, documentaries, short films and regional cinema. Screenings and associated programmes are being held across Srinagar, Jammu and Gulmarg.

The festival's programme includes an international competition, Bharat Panorama, Jammu & Kashmir Select, documentary and short-film sections, besides masterclasses, industry interactions and discussions.

Earlier in the day, the festival had a ceremonial opening at INOX Srinagar, where Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo and Director Information and Public Relations formally set the festival in motion.

The evening programme at SKICC featured musical and cultural performances, with the venue illuminated for the opening celebrations as filmmakers, delegates and guests gathered for the event.

Among the prominent names associated with the festival are filmmakers Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Ramesh Sippy and Imtiaz Ali, actor Pankaj Tripathi and actors Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sadia Khateeb and Vedang Raina, among others.

The festival has also drawn participation from international filmmakers and cinema professionals from countries including Spain, Japan, Germany, Mexico, Jordan, France and Canada.

Rs 96 lakh prize purse

The inaugural edition carries a total prize purse of Rs 96 lakh across nine award categories.

The awards include Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress, besides technical awards, Best Debut Film of a Director and a special award for Best Film on Jammu and Kashmir.

The Jammu & Kashmir Select section has been included to provide local filmmakers a dedicated platform within the larger festival programme, allowing regional stories to be showcased alongside Indian and international cinema.

Beyond film screenings, the festival features masterclasses, industry panels and interactions aimed at connecting emerging filmmakers, technicians and students with established professionals from India and abroad.

The organisers have positioned IFFJK as more than a four-day film showcase, with an emphasis on reviving Jammu and Kashmir's longstanding connection with the film industry and promoting the region as a destination for filmmaking, cultural exchange and film tourism.

The initiative comes at a time when the administration is seeking to attract greater film production to Jammu and Kashmir. The region has historically served as a location for several Hindi and regional films, but the festival seeks to build a broader ecosystem around that association.

The success of that ambition, however, will depend on whether the festival can lead to sustained investment in production infrastructure, financing, distribution and professional opportunities for local filmmakers and technicians.

The organisers have sought to create such linkages through industry-focused sessions covering storytelling, emerging trends and technological developments in filmmaking.

For local filmmakers and creative professionals, these interactions are expected to provide an opportunity to engage directly with established filmmakers and practitioners and gain exposure to international filmmaking practices.

Beyond the festival

The festival also seeks to give Jammu and Kashmir a more active role in the film industry, moving beyond its traditional identity as a picturesque backdrop for film productions.

The inclusion of local cinema, international competition and industry interactions reflects an attempt to create a platform where films are not only screened but also discussed, evaluated and connected to wider professional networks.

The festival's opening has also prompted traffic management measures in Srinagar. Traffic Police has imposed restrictions around Gupkar Road and adjoining routes in view of the opening ceremony at SKICC.

General traffic on Gupkar Road has been restricted from 4 pm to 7 pm, while diversions have been announced around Badyari Chowk, Brein Chowk, Nishat, Harwan and Hazratbal. Emergency traffic is being allowed through the shortest available route, while hotel guests and residents in the affected areas have been given access subject to the traffic arrangements.

For Jammu and Kashmir, the maiden IFFJK represents an attempt to reconnect with a cinematic legacy while creating new institutional and industry links.

Whether it becomes a lasting platform for local filmmakers and a catalyst for film production in the region will depend on what follows after the four-day event.

For now, however, Srinagar has taken centre stage, with 135 films from 41 countries bringing the world of cinema to Jammu and Kashmir and giving the region its first international film festival.
