Kallas Warns Russia-Blind Parties Gaining Ground After AfD Win
(MENAFN) Europe's top diplomat sounded the alarm Monday over the rising fortunes of political movements she says refuse to acknowledge the danger posed by Moscow, days after Germany's far-right party posted a landslide result in a regional vote.
Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, made the remarks during a visit to Lithuania, where she appeared alongside Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius. She cautioned that acts of sabotage and other hostile activity are edging nearer to European soil.
"At the same time, parties that are in a sense blind to this threat and say we shouldn’t do anything about it because it’s none of our business are strengthening their positions," Kallas said.
Her comments came a day after the Alternative for Germany (AfD) captured roughly 44% of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt's state election — more than double the share it won in the region back in 2021.
That tally left Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) trailing badly, with the party managing only around 17% support. Still, the AfD's showing stopped short of the outright majority it would have needed to seize control of the state government, which would have marked the first far-right-led state administration in Germany since World War II.
"So I'm just afraid that we could wake up in a situation where we haven't done enough to deter threats and defend ourselves," Kallas warned.
She was careful, however, to stop short of criticizing German voters directly. "But of course, the German people themselves, a democratic country, have to make their own choices," she added.
