Bosnia Recalls Embassy Staff From Serbia Over Mladić Glorification
(MENAFN) Bosnia and Herzegovina said Monday it will pull embassy staff from Belgrade and freeze bilateral meetings with Serbia, citing the glorification of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić.
Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic unveiled the measures at a news conference, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry.
He said all personnel at Bosnia and Herzegovina's embassy in Belgrade whom the ministry has authority to recall will be withdrawn, with consular services shifted to the country's embassies in Zagreb, Croatia, and Podgorica, Montenegro, as well as its Consulate General in Novi Pazar, Serbia.
Konakovic also confirmed a suspension of bilateral meetings, saying communication with Serbia will be scaled back to the "lowest possible level."
He added that Bosnia and Herzegovina will step up diplomatic outreach to the EU and its member states, along with the US, UK, and members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
Mladić, dubbed the "Butcher of Bosnia," was convicted by a UN tribunal on charges of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, including his role in the 1995 Srebrenica genocide. He died August 27 while serving a life sentence in prison in The Hague.
