Germany Finds 21 Explosives Near Power Lines, Hunts Grid Saboteur
(MENAFN) German authorities uncovered nine additional homemade explosive devices near high-voltage power lines Monday, following a string of attempted attacks on the electrical grid in the eastern state of Saxony.
Special forces from the Saxony State Criminal Police Office defused the devices, the agency said in a statement, pushing the total number of explosives recovered in Saxony to 21. That figure builds on Saturday's discovery of 12 devices in the Lusatian lignite mining region.
"These were intended to cause damage to high-voltage power lines by inducing a short circuit," police and the Dresden State Prosecutor's Office said, adding that the grid sustained no damage and the public faced no danger.
Manhunt Widens for Suspected Saboteur
Separately, investigators broadened their search Monday for a suspected saboteur believed to be behind a series of attacks on Germany's power network.
A 48-year-old man is suspected of carrying out attempted sabotage since last week across the states of Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia. Investigators released a wanted notice with photos and appealed to the public for information.
A major operation unfolded Monday between Remscheid and Wuppertal in North Rhine-Westphalia, where officers pursued a suspicious individual seen carrying a backpack near a substation in Remscheid. It remained unclear at the time whether that person was the suspect authorities are seeking.
A spokesperson for Cologne police told German news agency DPA that operations had been underway in the greater Wuppertal area since the morning, tied to numerous attacks on the power grid across multiple states. A helicopter was seen circling the area between Remscheid-Luttringhausen and Wuppertal-Ronsdorf.
