US Forces Sink Suspected Drug-Trafficking Refueling Ship
(MENAFN) U.S. forces intercepted and sank a vessel Monday that allegedly functioned as a "floating refueling station" for illegal drug trafficking in the Eastern Pacific, the US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) announced.
"Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere (JTF-WHEM) forces successfully interdicted a floating refueling station supporting illicit at-sea drug trafficking operations," SOUTHCOM said in a post on X. Intelligence indicated the vessel was supporting Los Choneros, which the U.S. describes as a "violent narco-terrorist organization."
American units cleared the ship and removed its crew before scuttling it in international waters. SOUTHCOM said those taken from the vessel would be handed over to Ecuadorian authorities for further legal proceedings.
Washington designated the Ecuador-based Los Choneros a Foreign Terrorist Organization and Specially Designated Global Terrorist last September. Monday's operation marks at least the fourth such mission since late August.
