Israeli Judges Fear Sanctions Over Hamas Tribunal Role
(MENAFN) Israeli judges are worried that presiding over a special court set to try Hamas fighters linked to the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks could expose them to international sanctions, travel bans and security risks, an Israeli newspaper reported Monday.
According to the newspaper, judges from Israel's military courts have voiced reservations about joining the panel expected to try members of Hamas's elite Nukhba force. In closed-door discussions, several judges cautioned that participating in the trials could prompt some countries to sanction them or bar their entry.
Judicial sources told Haaretz that Israeli military court judges are already barred from staying in or transiting through Gulf states. "A considerable number of judges fear that the expected public exposure surrounding the trials could lead to further restrictions," the sources said.
The judges have also raised concerns about their own safety, with Israel's VIP protection unit expected to provide security during the proceedings, the report said.
In May, Israel's parliament, the Knesset, passed legislation establishing the special court to try those accused of involvement in the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks, according to the newspaper.
In the war that followed in Gaza, the Israeli army has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians and wounded over 174,000, while destroying or damaging much of the enclave's civilian infrastructure.
