Syria Integrates Armed Factions Into National Army
(MENAFN) Syria integrates armed factions into its national army as part of efforts to place all weapons under state control and reinforce national sovereignty, Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani says Monday.
Speaking at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo during the 166th regular session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level, al-Shaibani says the move is intended to protect Syria’s recovery and strengthen the authority of state institutions.
“To protect this recovery, we integrated the armed factions and rebuilt our national army on the basis of restricting arms to the state,” he says.
Al-Shaibani stresses that establishing a state monopoly over weapons is a sovereign decision designed to protect all Syrians. He adds that Damascus has reorganized its security and defense institutions to secure the country’s borders and preserve its sovereignty.
The foreign minister also highlights the major changes Syria has experienced under President Ahmed al-Sharaa over the past 20 months, saying the country has shifted from managing a prolonged crisis toward rebuilding its institutions and infrastructure.
He says Syria has brought an end to decades of authoritarian rule, “unified the country,” defeated efforts to divide its territory and restored government control over northeastern areas.
