Yemen's Government Declares Decision to Retake Sanaa from Houthis
(MENAFN) Yemen's internationally recognized government announced Monday that it has decided to move on the capital, Sanaa, currently held by the Houthi movement.
"The decision has been made to retake Sana'a. There are surprises we will not reveal now," Deputy Defense Minister Major General Samir Al-Sabri told a state-run TV channel.
Yemeni army spokesman Majid al-Nuzaili echoed that goal in a post on X, confirming the recapture of Sanaa as the objective.
"From today, we declare that our goal is clear and unequivocal: to liberate Yemen from the grip of the terrorist Houthi militias and restore Sanaa as a capital for all Yemenis," al-Nuzaili wrote.
He stressed that the government's outreach extends to all Yemenis nationwide, adding: "We affirm that all Yemenis are partners in the future, and that there is no place for revenge or retribution, nor for discrimination among the citizens of one nation."
Yemen has seen relative calm since April 2022, following nearly 12 years of war between Saudi-backed government forces and the Iranian-backed Houthis, who seized Sanaa and large swaths of the country back in 2014.
Since Israel's war in Gaza began in late 2023, the Houthis have deepened their role in regional conflict, striking Israel and commercial vessels in the Red Sea. Renewed fighting in recent weeks has stoked fears that Yemen could slide back into full-scale war.
