New Mexico Leaders Reject Trump Proposal to Rename State New America
(MENAFN) Political leaders in New Mexico have rejected President Donald Trump’s suggestion that the state should be renamed "New America," saying its current name is deeply rooted in the state’s history and identity.
Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said there was no discussion to be had about changing the state’s name and pointed out that New Mexico was known by that name before the United States was established.
"While the White House wastes time coloring on maps, Nuevo Mexico is busy doing the work," she wrote on X.
Trump shared several posts on Truth Social over the weekend and Monday portraying the state as "New America." One AI-generated image showed Trump placing a "New America" sign over an existing "Welcome to New Mexico" sign.
"Many people suggested changing the name of New Mexico, one of the great vote cheating states of all time, to NEW AMERICA," Trump wrote Sunday.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Deb Haaland rejected the idea, while Republican candidate Gregg Hull also opposed it, saying the state’s identity "is not up for negotiation."
Democratic Sens. Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Lujan, along with Rep. Melanie Stansbury, also criticized Trump’s proposal.
“Three things I will always call by their actual names … The Gulf of Mexico, Lake Ontario, New Mexico,” Heinrich wrote on X.
“It’s New Mexico, always has been and always will be. Just like how you’ll always be a sinvergüenza and corrupt,” Lujan said, using the Spanish term for scoundrel.
“Our state’s name carries generations of history, culture, and family—and it belongs to us. We’re New Mexicans. Period,” Stansbury said on X.
Trump cannot change the name of a US state through a presidential order. New Mexico’s name is protected by the state constitution, meaning any change would require voters to approve a constitutional amendment.
Trump has previously directed federal agencies to adopt alternative names for geographic landmarks, including changing the federal designation of the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America" and Denali to "Mount McKinley."
