China Urges Mexico Ties Free From Outside Meddling, Deeper Trade Links
(MENAFN) China's top diplomat pressed Mexico on Monday to deepen political and economic cooperation while keeping the relationship shielded from outside pressure, as the two countries' foreign ministers met in the Chinese capital.
Wang Yi hosted Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente Velasco for talks in Beijing, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said. It marked Velasco's first official trip to China since he took up the post in April.
"China-Mexico relations do not target any third party, nor should they be affected by any third party," Wang said, according to the ministry.
Wang told Velasco that Beijing backs Mexico's independence, sovereignty and security, and rejects outside interference in the country's affairs. He pushed for more frequent high-level contacts, stronger political trust and expanded cooperation across multiple sectors.
Velasco, for his part, reaffirmed Mexico's commitment to the one-China principle and UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, and pledged to broaden practical cooperation with Beijing.
The two nations first established diplomatic relations on Feb. 14, 1972, and elevated the relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2013.
Economically, the ties run deep: China ranks as Mexico's second-largest trading partner worldwide, while Mexico is China's second-biggest trade partner in Latin America, behind only Brazil. Bilateral trade hit $109.38 billion in 2025, with $89.16 billion of that made up of Chinese exports to Mexico, according to Chinese customs data cited by the Foreign Ministry.
