Russia Issues Warning Over US Missile Systems in Norway
(MENAFN) Russia warns Monday that US missile systems stationed in Norway could be targeted if an armed conflict breaks out, arguing that their range allows them to reach a large portion of European Russia, including Moscow.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova says Russia’s strategic deterrence forces are already considering the locations of the US missile systems and their associated command facilities when planning potential strike operations.
“For those who made the decision in Washington and Oslo to deploy these systems in Norway, it should not come as a surprise that, as part of Russia’s response measures, the locations where American systems and their control facilities are deployed become a subject of special attention from Russia’s strategic deterrence forces,” she says.
Zakharova says the deployment gives the systems the ability to cover “a considerable sector of the European part of Russian territory, including Moscow.” She adds that the launchers can be equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles.
Her remarks come after a US Navy mobile containerized missile launcher is deployed to Trondheim for the NATO Atlantic City 26 exercise. The drills take place from Aug. 26 to Sept. 4 and involve forces from the United States, Britain and Norway.
