Meloni Says EU Border Protection Safeguards Schengen
(MENAFN) Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni says Monday that stronger protection of the European Union’s external borders is essential to maintaining the Schengen area.
"I remain firmly convinced that the Schengen area can be preserved in the best possible way only if the Union’s external borders are defended, only if all member states continue to do their part in the fight against traffickers and against mass illegal immigration," Meloni says during a joint news conference with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever in Rome.
Meloni says the two leaders also discuss how to manage migration flows following a particularly active summer that once again highlights questions about Europe’s ability to deal with migration-related challenges and respond effectively to emerging crises.
She further calls for international conventions to be interpreted and applied more effectively.
The Italian premier says her discussions with De Wever also cover the economic and social effects of international crises. She adds that European leaders should address competitiveness and energy costs at the upcoming European Council meeting.
