Türkiye Condemns Funeral Ceremony for Bosnian War Criminal Ratko Mladic
(MENAFN) Türkiye on Tuesday condemned the organization of a funeral ceremony for former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic, who was convicted of genocide and other war crimes, describing the event as "unacceptable."
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oncu Keceli said honoring Mladic in a way that minimizes the crimes for which he was convicted would amount to denying the suffering caused by those atrocities.
"It is unacceptable for the funeral ceremony of Ratko Mladic, who was convicted by international courts in final judgments for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, to be exploited in a manner that amounts to denying the grave crimes committed and the human suffering endured," Keceli said.
He warned that rejecting international court rulings or presenting convicted war criminals as heroes would increase the suffering of victims and their relatives while damaging long-running efforts aimed at peace and reconciliation across the Balkans.
"Rejecting the relevant court judgments or attempting to portray convicted perpetrators as heroes deepens the pain of victims and their families, while also undermining the longstanding efforts to promote peace and reconciliation in the region," Keceli added.
Keceli stressed that Balkan countries should confront the lessons of their past and cooperate toward a peaceful, prosperous future while remembering those who died during the Bosnian War.
He also honored all innocent victims of the conflict, particularly those killed during the Srebrenica genocide, and expressed his support for their families.
Mladic, the former commander of the Bosnian Serb Army, died in The Hague on Aug. 27 at the age of 84 while serving a life sentence for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
He was convicted for atrocities committed during the 1992-1995 Bosnian War, including his role in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, where more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were killed.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic had offered to arrange Mladic’s burial in Serbia.
