Serbia Prime Minister Proposes Early Parliamentary Elections
(MENAFN) Serbian Prime Minister Duro Macut proposes Monday that the government formally ask President Aleksandar Vucic to dissolve the National Assembly and pave the way for early parliamentary elections.
"I propose that the Government of the Republic of Serbia, in accordance with the Constitution, propose to the President of the Republic to dissolve the National Assembly and call elections for members of parliament," Macut says during a parliamentary session.
The government approves the proposal during an extraordinary meeting, according to reports.
Macut says holding new elections can help reinforce state institutions, ease political tensions and move the country away from what he describes as a politics of exclusivity. He adds that the current government will remain in office and continue performing its responsibilities until a new cabinet is formed.
"A mandate has its end, but our responsibility toward the state continues every day. I am confident that this government will continue on its set path in the future," Macut says.
Submitting a request to dissolve parliament is a required constitutional procedure before early legislative elections can formally be announced. Vucic has previously said he expects to call the vote by Sept. 9 or 10 at the latest, with Oct. 18 or 25 being considered as possible election dates.
The constitution requires the president to issue a decree dissolving parliament within 72 hours after receiving the government’s proposal.
