Four Paintings Stolen from Renoir Museum During France Burglary
(MENAFN) At least four paintings were taken from the Auguste Renoir Museum in southern France during a nighttime break-in, according to local reports on Tuesday.
Two burglars reportedly entered the museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, near Nice, after breaking through a glass door.
Security cameras allegedly captured the suspects removing paintings from their frames before the alarm was activated at 5:48 a.m. local time.
The thieves escaped with four artworks before police reached the museum, while authorities continued examining the site to determine the full scale of the losses.
Investigators later discovered two zippered bags in the museum’s garden that may have been left behind by the burglars.
The investigation is being handled by France’s Sub-Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and Specialized Delinquency.
The museum is located at Les Collettes, the former home and final residence of French Impressionist artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Its collection includes around 10 original Renoir paintings, roughly 40 sculptures, along with furniture, personal items, photographs and archival materials.
