Sudan Prosecutor Blames Foreign Backing for RSF War's Endurance
(MENAFN) Sudan's prosecutor general told the UN Human Rights Council on Monday that external support for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces is a key driver behind the war's persistence and ongoing violations, calling for firm international action to shut it down.
Intisar Ahmed Abdelaal made the remarks during a briefing at the council's interactive dialogue on Sudan, part of its 63rd session in Geneva, according to the Sudanese News Agency. Abdelaal also heads Sudan's National Committee for Investigating Crimes and Violations of National and International Law.
"External support for the militia represents a major reason for the prolongation of the war and the continuation of violations," she said, referring to the RSF.
She pressed the council to condemn that support and adopt "decisive measures" to bring it to an end.
Abdelaal repeated her call for the Human Rights Council and other UN bodies to back the national committee, respect the principle of complementarity, and move immediately to cut off foreign support for the RSF. She also restated Sudan's rejection of external mechanisms that sidestep national efforts, reiterating her country's opposition to the resolution that created the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan.
The remarks follow a Thursday statement from the UN fact-finding mission, which said external support networks are helping sustain the war in Sudan.
The Sudanese army and the RSF have been locked in conflict since April 2023, a war that has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced roughly 13 million, according to UN and international estimates.
