Palace Confirms Harry, Meghan Remain Non-Working Royals
(MENAFN) Prince Harry and Meghan, the duke and duchess of Sussex, will not return to royal duties, Buckingham Palace confirmed in a letter issued Monday following the couple's arrival back in the UK.
The Sussexes still cannot use the titles "His and Her Royal Highness" and remain "private citizens," the BBC reported, citing the letter sent on behalf of King Charles by the lord chamberlain, a senior palace official.
According to palace sources, the letter was distributed to Prince Harry's team, government departments, military officials, lord lieutenants — the monarch's local representatives — and government staff who typically assist with royal visits and engagements.
The communication follows the duke and duchess's return to the UK on Aug. 26 with their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5 — six years after they stepped back from their roles as senior working royals and relocated to California.
The letter reaffirmed that the terms agreed in 2020 when the Sussexes left, known as the Sandringham Agreement, remain in force. Those terms rule out any "half-in and half-out" arrangement, meaning the couple cannot pursue their own commercial ventures while also functioning as working royals.
"It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of the Sovereign, and are no longer working members of the Royal Family," the letter said.
It added: "The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity."
