Seoul, Manila to Deepen Defense, Arms Industry Ties
(MENAFN) South Korea and the Philippines agreed Monday to broaden defense and arms industry cooperation, including personnel exchanges and joint military exercises, Seoul's Defense Ministry said.
South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back met with Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr. in Seoul, where Teodoro was visiting for the 2026 Seoul Defense Dialogue, according to a statement from South Korea's Defense Ministry.
The two officials agreed to strengthen regular consultations between their defense authorities and expand cooperation on personnel exchanges and joint exercises. They also committed to deepening defense industry ties beyond existing naval and air weapons programs, building on agreements reached during a bilateral summit in March.
Ahn touted South Korean land, naval and air weapons systems and pressed for Manila's support in helping Korean companies join the Philippines' military modernization drive. Teodoro, in turn, praised South Korea's defense industry capabilities and voiced hope for an expanded bilateral partnership.
Ahn also pledged support for the Philippines in its role as this year's chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), including cooperation on peacekeeping operations.
The two defense chiefs also discussed regional security, with Teodoro voicing support for Seoul's pursuit of "peaceful coexistence" on the Korean Peninsula.
The meeting marked their second this year, following earlier talks in Singapore in June.
