US Forces Sink Vessel Allegedly Used as Floating Drug Refueling Station
(MENAFN) US forces intercepted and later sank a vessel allegedly being used as a maritime refueling point for illegal drug trafficking in the Eastern Pacific, according to US Southern Command.
“Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere (JTF-WHEM) forces successfully interdicted a floating refueling station supporting illicit at-sea drug trafficking operations,” SOUTHCOM said on the US social media platform X.
US intelligence indicated that the vessel was allegedly assisting Los Choneros, described as a "violent narco-terrorist organization."
American forces boarded and secured the vessel, removed its crew, then sank the ship in international waters.
The people taken off the vessel are expected to be handed over to Ecuadorian authorities for further legal proceedings, according to SOUTHCOM.
Washington designated Los Choneros, which is based in Ecuador, as both a Foreign Terrorist Organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist in September last year.
The operation is reportedly the fourth mission of its kind carried out by US forces since the end of August.
