Syria Says It Has Folded Armed Factions Into National Army
(MENAFN) Syria has absorbed armed factions into its national military as part of a wider push to keep weapons solely in state hands, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani announced Monday.
Addressing the 166th regular session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level, held at the organization's Cairo headquarters, al-Shaibani said the step was designed to safeguard Syria's recovery and reinforce state sovereignty.
"To protect this recovery, we integrated the armed factions and rebuilt our national army on the basis of restricting arms to the state," he said, according to Syrian state media.
He stressed that keeping arms under exclusive state control was a sovereign choice made to protect all Syrians, and said Damascus had overhauled its security and defense institutions to secure the country's borders and sovereignty.
Al-Shaibani said Syria has been transformed over the past 20 months under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, shifting from crisis management to active reconstruction. He said the country had brought an end to decades of authoritarian rule, "unified the country," defeated efforts at partition, and brought northeastern Syria back under state authority.
He added that Damascus is working through "justice and reconciliation" to address the wounds inflicted on Syrian society by the former regime.
"We are steadily moving forward in implementing the three-part roadmap that we worked on with brotherly Jordan," al-Shaibani said, offering no further detail on the initiative.
The foreign minister said national institutions have been restructured and a new parliament established, with education ranked among the government's top priorities. He said hundreds of thousands of Syrian children and young people have returned from displacement camps to classrooms and universities, as authorities work to repair damaged educational infrastructure.
Al-Shaibani also voiced hope that Syria would be brought into Arab development funds and programs by 2027.
On regional conflicts, al-Shaibani said Damascus has stood in solidarity with Gulf nations and Jordan since the eruption of what he termed the "American-Israeli-Iranian war."
"We reject the Iranian attacks on their territories and the use of weapons outside the framework of the state," he said.
Turning to Israel, al-Shaibani welcomed the Arab League's condemnation of Colombia's decision to recognize Israel's annexation of the occupied Golan Heights.
"Syria affirms that Arab rights in the occupied Golan are inalienable," he said, adding that Damascus remains committed to diplomacy and is working to halt Israeli attacks, arrests and incursions into Syrian territory.
