Russia Factors U.S. Norway Missile Deployment as Potential Threat
(MENAFN) Russia said Monday that US missile systems stationed in Norway would come under attack in the event of armed conflict, warning that the systems can strike deep into European Russia, including Moscow.
In a statement posted on the Russian Foreign Ministry's website, ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Russia's strategic deterrence forces are already factoring the locations of the US systems and their command facilities into planning for the potential use of strike weapons.
"For those who made the decision in Washington and Oslo to deploy these systems in Norway, it should not come as a surprise that, as part of Russia's response measures, the locations where American systems and their control facilities are deployed become a subject of special attention from Russia's strategic deterrence forces," she said.
Zakharova said the systems' placement in Norway gives them reach over "a considerable sector of the European part of Russian territory, including Moscow," adding that the systems are capable of firing Tomahawk cruise missiles.
The warning came after the US Navy deployed a mobile containerized missile launcher to the Norwegian city of Trondheim for the NATO Atlantic City 26 exercise, held from Aug. 26 to Sept. 4 with the participation of the United States, Britain and Norway.
The US Navy has previously showcased the containerized launcher equipped with both Tomahawk and SM-6 missiles, though publicly released US materials do not specify which, if any, missiles were paired with the launcher during its deployment to Norway.
