Finland Warns Russia’s Ambitions Go Beyond Ukraine
(MENAFN) Russia’s strategic ambitions reach beyond the war in Ukraine, with Moscow seeking to regain at least part of the influence it exercised during the Soviet era, Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen says Monday.
“Russia's imperial ambitions will not end with Ukraine,” Hakkanen says, referring to the conflict that began in 2022 and has now entered its fifth year.
He describes Russia as a long-term and unpredictable security threat, stressing that Finland needs to respond with a calm but strong and determined approach.
“The time to strengthen Finland's national defense is now,” he says.
Hakkanen also notes that the effects of Europe’s higher defense spending are unlikely to become fully evident until the 2030s.
Finland is meanwhile working with neighboring Sweden to strengthen its ability to counter drones. Hakkanen calls the joint effort “a significant and historic step” toward deeper defense cooperation between the two Nordic countries, saying it reflects their growing willingness to take greater responsibility for regional security.
Finland shares a 1,343-kilometer (834-mile) border with Russia, making it the longest Russian border among NATO member states.
On Monday, Finnish authorities announce that a 200-kilometer (124-mile) barrier along the country’s border with Russia has been completed.
