Mexico President Stands by Electoral System Amid Manipulation Claims
(MENAFN) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum defends the country’s electoral system on Monday following concerns raised by former Colombian President Gustavo Petro over the potential use of algorithms, artificial intelligence and social media to influence election results.
“It’s the citizens that count the votes,” Sheinbaum says during her morning news conference as she explains how Mexico’s electoral process operates.
She says the National Electoral Institute oversees the organization of elections, while the Electoral Tribunal is responsible for validating and certifying the results.
According to Sheinbaum, Mexican citizens who are selected to work on polling station boards are responsible for counting ballots. She contrasts this process with Colombia’s system, where Petro has questioned the involvement of private companies in vote counting.
The Mexican president also acknowledges that voting irregularities have occurred at some polling stations.
She says authorities have recorded cases involving changes to electoral records, as well as potential irregularities linked to the Preliminary Electoral Results Program.
Sheinbaum calls for the identification of networks receiving financial support to distribute political propaganda across different countries. She also urges political parties to meet their responsibilities and uphold proper conduct throughout electoral processes.
