Italy Records Its Hottest Summer Since 1950
(MENAFN) Italy records its hottest summer since 1950, with temperatures in 2026 exceeding the previous peak registered in 2003, according to an analysis by the Institute for Bioeconomy of Italy’s National Research Council.
The country’s average summer temperature reaches 24.3 degrees Celsius (75.7F), surpassing the previous record of 23.6C (74.5F) recorded in 2003.
“The average temperature of 24.3 degrees Celsius (75.7F) recorded in summer 2026 exceeds the previous record of 23.6 degrees Celsius (74.5F) set in 2003,” said Lorenzo Arcidiaco, a researcher at the institute.
Researchers base their findings on temperature records dating back to 1950 and contained in the ERA5-Land database operated by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.
August also becomes Italy’s hottest month on record, averaging 25.6C (78.1F). The figure exceeds the previous August records of 24.6C (76.3F) in 2024 and 24C (75.2F) in 2017.
Arcidiaco said the latest figures raise the possibility that 2026 could become Italy’s hottest year since 1950. He also noted that July and August set consecutive monthly temperature records for the first time.
Italy experiences an unusually warm spring as well, with the season’s average temperature reaching 12.1C (53.8F), matching the record established in 2024, which remains the hottest year recorded since 1950.
Between January and August, approximately 70% of Italy experiences temperature anomalies above 1C (1.8F), while nearly 40% of the country records anomalies exceeding 2C (3.6F), the institute’s analysis shows.
