Police Find More Explosives Near Power Lines in Germany
(MENAFN) German authorities discover nine additional homemade explosive devices near high-voltage power lines in the eastern state of Saxony following a series of suspected attempts to sabotage the country’s power infrastructure.
Specialist units from the Saxony State Criminal Police Office safely neutralize the newly discovered devices, bringing the total number of explosives recently found in the state to 21.
Authorities had previously announced the discovery of 12 explosive devices on Saturday in the Lusatian lignite mining region.
“These were intended to cause damage to high-voltage power lines by inducing a short circuit,” authorities say, adding that the attempted sabotage does not cause any damage to the power network and poses no threat to the public.
Investigators also expand their search for a man suspected of involvement in attacks targeting Germany’s electricity infrastructure.
A 48-year-old man is suspected of carrying out several attempted acts of sabotage against the power network since last week in Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia.
Police issue a wanted notice containing photographs of the suspect and appeal to members of the public for information that could help identify and locate him.
