Bosnia and Herzegovina Cuts Ties with Serbia Over Mladić Glorification
(MENAFN) Bosnia and Herzegovina announces plans to scale back diplomatic communication with Serbia to the “lowest possible level” and recall embassy personnel in response to the glorification of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić.
Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic announces the measures during a news conference, saying Bosnia and Herzegovina will withdraw all embassy staff in Belgrade whom the Foreign Ministry has the authority to recall.
Consular services will instead be handled through Bosnia and Herzegovina’s diplomatic missions in Zagreb, Croatia, and Podgorica, Montenegro, as well as its Consulate General in Novi Pazar, Serbia.
Konakovic also announces the suspension of bilateral meetings with Serbia, emphasizing that communication between the two countries will be reduced to the “lowest possible level”.
At the same time, Bosnia and Herzegovina plans to strengthen diplomatic engagement with the European Union and its member states, alongside the United States, United Kingdom and countries belonging to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
Ratko Mladić, widely known as the "Butcher of Bosnia," is convicted by a UN tribunal of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, including responsibility for his role in the 1995 Srebrenica genocide. He dies on August 27 while serving a life sentence in prison in The Hague.
