US Gains Access to More Australian Military Facilities
(MENAFN) The US military and American defense companies now have access to more than half of Australia’s military facilities, according to a study examining the growing US presence across the country’s defense infrastructure.
The assessment finds that the US military directly controls 17 facilities on the Australian mainland while also having access to 75 sites operated by Australian forces. American defense companies have access to an additional 18 facilities.
Together, the 110 facilities either controlled by or accessible to the US military and US defense contractors represent more than half of Australia’s military installations.
Richard Tanter, an honorary professor of political and social studies at the University of Melbourne who prepared the study, describes the situation as one of pervasiveness rather than simple penetration. He notes that more than half of the defense facilities included in the assessment have some form of US access.
Tanter argues that Washington has spent more than a decade expanding its ability to use Australian territory for intensive military operations in the event of a potential conflict with China. He also says Australia has fully “aligned itself with American strategic planning.”
