Nauru Becomes Latest Country to Open Embassy in Jerusalem
(MENAFN) Nauru opens its embassy to Israel in occupied Jerusalem, becoming the ninth country to establish a diplomatic mission in the city despite international resolutions concerning its status.
The embassy is officially inaugurated in the presence of Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Nauru’s Vice President and Foreign Minister Lionel Aingimea.
“Today, Nauru becomes the ninth country, and the third from the South Pacific, to open an embassy in Jerusalem. More are on the way,” Sa’ar says during the ceremony.
Nauru, a small island nation in the South Pacific, ranks among the world’s smallest countries. It covers about 21 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 12,000.
Aingimea says: “We see the opening of our embassy here in Jerusalem not only as strengthening our relations with Israel, but also as a message to the whole world about our position.”
The latest move adds Nauru to the group of countries maintaining embassies in Jerusalem. The city currently hosts diplomatic missions from the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Kosovo, Paraguay, Papua New Guinea and Fiji, as well as a mission representing Somaliland, a self-declared breakaway region of Somalia that lacks international recognition.
