Serbia's PM Calls for Parliament's Dissolution, Setting Up Early Vote
(MENAFN) Serbian Prime Minister Duro Macut called on the government Monday to formally request that President Aleksandar Vucic dissolve the National Assembly, according to a public broadcaster.
Addressing a parliamentary session, Macut said: "I propose that the Government of the Republic of Serbia, in accordance with the Constitution, propose to the President of the Republic to dissolve the National Assembly and call elections for members of parliament."
The government went on to adopt Macut's proposal during an extraordinary session, according to the report.
Macut framed the upcoming vote as a chance to shore up state institutions, defuse political tension and move away from exclusionary politics. He stressed that the current cabinet would keep functioning with full responsibility and momentum until a new government takes office.
"A mandate has its end, but our responsibility toward the state continues every day. I am confident that this government will continue on its set path in the future," he said.
Dissolving parliament is a mandatory procedural step ahead of any early parliamentary election. Vucic has previously said he intends to call the vote by September 9 or 10 at the latest, with polling day expected to fall on either October 18 or 25.
Serbia's constitution gives the president 72 hours to issue a decree dissolving parliament once the government's proposal is received.
