Trump Threatens to Ban Bombardier Sales in US Over Trade Feud
(MENAFN) President Donald Trump escalated his trade dispute with Canada on Monday, calling for a US ban on aircraft sales by Canadian manufacturer Bombardier unless the company shifts production to American soil.
"No more selling Bombardier in the United States!" Trump wrote on Truth Social, asserting that more than half of the company's revenue is generated in the US market.
The president went further, accusing Canada of shutting out American banks and businesses, singling out Gulfstream Aerospace as a company he says has been denied access to Canadian markets. He labeled the situation "Completely unjust and unfair!"
"That era is over! if they want our market, they must build here," Trump declared, calling on Americans to "buy American" and "fly on American airliners."
Bombardier pushed back swiftly, framing itself as an asset rather than a threat to US industry. The company said American aerospace remains "a clear winner on trade and exports" and described itself as a "strong contributor to the sector."
According to the company, its US operations support "tens of thousands of jobs across the United States," with direct employment spanning more than 20 states and annual supplier spending topping "over $2.5 billion with suppliers each year." Bombardier also pointed to its use of "American-made components," including engines and avionics, and said it intends to grow its US-based service and defense operations.
"Bombardier values its great partnership with American companies and its US employees. Our plan is to continue to invest in our people, our customers and the communities in which we operate across the country," the company said in a statement.
The clash comes on the heels of a breakdown in US-Canada trade negotiations last month, which prompted Washington to slap 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged matching, dollar-for-dollar retaliatory measures set to take effect Tuesday — a move that threatens to deepen the rift between the two neighboring economies.
