Witkoff Says US Sees Progress Toward Ukraine Peace
(MENAFN) US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff says Washington has made “substantive progress” in its latest diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, including steps toward arranging another round of trilateral negotiations involving the US, Russia and Ukraine.
“Substantive progress was made, including movement on scheduling additional trilateral talks,” Witkoff says while describing recent meetings between US officials and the Russian and Ukrainian leaderships.
Witkoff also says US President Donald Trump is “working hard to stop the killing” and seeking to establish a lasting and durable peace.
Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday as part of Washington’s diplomatic push to end the conflict, which has now entered its fifth year. They subsequently travel to Kyiv, where they meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday, marking their first visit to Ukraine since the conflict began in 2022.
The diplomatic mission follows an agreement between Russia and Ukraine to pause attacks for three days to create conditions for the negotiations.
During discussions in Kyiv, US representatives are also joined by national security advisers from Britain, Germany and France, Witkoff says.
A day earlier, Witkoff says Washington believes diplomatic efforts are gaining momentum and expresses hope that trilateral negotiations between the US, Russia and Ukraine can resume.
“We think we made a lot of progress in Moscow. We heard new ideas,” he says.
