Trump Shares Map Showing US Flag Across North America
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump shares a map on his Truth Social account that appears to portray broad areas of North America and nearby territories as being under US control, adding to a series of controversial posts involving borders, geography and territorial claims.
The graphic places the US flag over the United States as well as significant portions of Canada, Greenland and Mexico. Other parts of the region also feature imagery associated with the United States. Trump does not provide an explanation or context for the image.
The post follows another controversial graphic shared a day earlier that appears to relabel the US state of New Mexico as New America, with the word Mexico crossed out and replaced with America. No formal proposal to change the state’s name has been announced by the US government.
Trump later shares several additional images with similar themes after the New Mexico graphic faces criticism from state officials.
New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham says the state’s name “isn’t up for debate,” while accusing Trump of “coloring on maps” as families struggle with higher fuel expenses.
Sen. Martin Heinrich says: “Three things I will always call by their actual names… The Gulf of Mexico, Lake Ontario, New Mexico.”
Rep. Melanie Stansbury also dismisses the proposal, saying: “We’re New Mexicans. Period.” Rep. Gabe Vasquez says Trump cannot “erase New Mexico,” its history or culture.
