Lebanon’s FM Backs Negotiations to End Israeli Attacks
(MENAFN) Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji condemns Israel’s ongoing attacks on Lebanon while arguing that negotiations with Tel Aviv offer the most effective path toward ending the violence.
Speaking during an Arab League foreign ministers’ meeting in Cairo, Rajji says Lebanon is at a “decisive moment” as the country seeks to strengthen state authority throughout its territory and secure an Israeli withdrawal to the internationally recognized border.
He criticizes Israel’s “continuing attacks, violations of international law and occupation of large areas of Lebanese territory.”
Rajji says the US-backed negotiation process “is the most effective way to stop the attacks and compel Israel to withdraw behind the internationally recognized borders.”
The Lebanese foreign minister also blames Hezbollah for pulling the country into two successive conflicts with Israel over the past two years. He says such involvement came despite repeated warnings about the risks to Lebanon’s security and the consequences of becoming involved in “such destructive wars.”
Lebanon and Israel have conducted seven rounds of direct negotiations with US mediation. The first five sessions take place in Washington and result in a 14-point framework agreement signed on June 26, while the following two rounds are held in Rome.
