Finland Expands Border Fence Along Russia Frontier
(MENAFN) Finland completes construction of a 200-kilometer section of fencing along its border with Russia as concerns over national security and migration continue to shape the country’s border policies.
The barrier covers a portion of Finland’s 1,340-kilometer frontier with Russia, which is the longest border with Russia shared by any European Union or NATO member.
Interior Minister Mari Rantanen says additional stretches of fencing could be built later and urges the European Union to provide financial support for border protection projects in member states along its eastern flank.
Rantanen argues that the barrier has become necessary as Europe’s security environment changes following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022, along with what she describes as various hybrid influence operations.
Finland shuts its border crossings with Russia in late 2023 after authorities accuse Moscow of deliberately facilitating the movement of asylum seekers toward the frontier as a means of applying hybrid pressure.
The Finnish government also proposes keeping its Border Security Act in effect for another two years. The legislation is intended to reinforce border protection and provide authorities with additional tools to respond to serious situations involving what officials describe as “instrumentalized migration.”
Work on the fence begins with a pilot section near Imatra in 2023, following a cross-party political agreement reached the previous year supporting the construction of a partial barrier along the Russian border.
