Yemeni Government Forces Gain Ground on Four Fronts Against Houthis
(MENAFN) Yemeni government forces reported new battlefield advances on Monday across four separate fronts in their fight against the Houthi group, as Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi pledged to maintain military operations until government authority is restored throughout the country.
The reported gains came in the governorates of Al-Jawf, Al-Bayda, Taiz and Al-Hudaydah, according to official reports.
During phone conversations with military and field commanders directing operations across the various fronts, al-Alimi commended the troops for their recent progress and said government forces had succeeded in taking back the initiative from the Houthis.
He also highlighted the contribution of air power and drones in providing support to forces operating on the ground.
Al-Alimi accused the Houthis of pursuing further escalation while turning down peace efforts, warning that the group would be responsible for the consequences of its actions.
“The armed forces will continue carrying out their constitutional duty until state institutions are restored and state authority is extended across the entire country,” he said.
Earlier on Monday, Yemen’s assistant defense minister said authorities had decided to launch efforts to recapture the capital, Sanaa, from Houthi control.
Meanwhile, the government-backed Giants Brigades said its forces had captured “strategic positions” during an operation in Al-Bayda. The group said 23 Houthi fighters were killed and dozens more were wounded in the fighting.
The Yemeni army also announced additional territorial gains and said its forces conducted 13 airstrikes targeting Houthi positions, gatherings and military vehicles in Al-Bayda.
The Houthis had not immediately issued a response to the latest reports from the battlefield.
Yemen had experienced a period of relative calm since April 2022 following years of conflict between government forces, supported by a Saudi-led coalition, and the Iranian-backed Houthis. The group seized Sanaa and significant parts of Yemen in 2014.
Tensions have increasingly spread beyond Yemen since late 2023, following the outbreak of the Israeli war in Gaza. The Houthis have launched attacks targeting Israel and commercial vessels in the Red Sea, while the latest escalation on the ground has renewed concerns that Yemen could once again slide into a broader war.
