International Workshop to Examine the Growing Impact of Climate Change on Mental Health
(MENAFN- Assaf Academy of Science of South Africa) The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), in partnership with the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, will host an international workshop entitled "Climate Change and Mental Health: Comparative Risk Pathways, Vulnerability, and Resilience" from 8 to10 September 2026 at the University of Pretoria.
Climate change is increasingly recognised as one of the greatest threats to human health. While its physical health impacts are well documented, its effects on mental health—including climate anxiety, trauma following extreme weather events, displacement, food insecurity, and social disruption—are receiving growing international attention.
The workshop forms part of the longstanding ASSAf–Leopoldina Science-for-Policy collaboration on Climate Change and Health, initiated in 2016 to strengthen scientific exchange and support evidence-informed policymaking between Africa and Germany.
Bringing together leading researchers from South Africa, Germany and other partner countries, the workshop will explore how climate-related environmental changes influence mental health across diverse social, economic and geographical contexts. Participants represent disciplines including psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, public health, climate science, environmental science and geography.
Over three days, participants will examine emerging scientific evidence, identify research priorities, compare experiences across countries, and collaboratively develop policy recommendations aimed at strengthening the integration of mental health into climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.
A key outcome of the workshop will be the development of a collaborative policy brief to inform policymakers in South Africa, Germany and internationally.
As an invitation-only scientific workshop, the event provides a platform for expert dialogue and interdisciplinary collaboration to advance evidence-based responses to one of the most pressing challenges facing society.
