8Th Pay Commission: Level 7 Pension Could Touch Rs 58,000 A Month? Check Full Calculation
(MENAFN- AsiaNet News) With the 8th Pay Commission now in place, government employees and pensioners are strongly demanding a pension revision. Calculations show that a Level 7 employee's minimum pension could go up to nearly ₹58,000.
The central government formed the 8th Pay Commission on November 3, 2025, with Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai as its head. The commission has already completed over 10 months of its 18-month term to submit its final report on pay, allowances, and pension revisions.
Upcoming meetings in Chennai, Puducherry (from September 9), Chandigarh (from September 16), and Bengaluru (from October 7) will bring pension issues into the spotlight. Many powerful employee and pensioner unions are demanding major changes to retirement benefits.
A key demand from well-known unions is to increase the pension under the 'Old Pension Scheme' (OPS) from 50% to 67% of the last drawn salary. Some groups are also asking for a family pension equal to 50% of the last salary.
Another big demand is to give civilian pensioners benefits similar to 'One Rank, One Pension' (OROP). However, the final fitment factor decided by the 8th Pay Commission will play a huge role in whether these demands are met.
As of September 6, there's no official update; the final report is expected around May-June 2027. Currently, under the 7th Pay Commission, pension is calculated at 50% of the last basic pay or the average basic pay of the last 10 months, whichever is higher.
Here's a look at the minimum pension based on the minimum basic pay for each level under the 7th Pay Commission: Level 4: ₹12,750 (Basic: ₹25,500), Level 5: ₹14,600 (Basic: ₹29,200), Level 6: ₹17,700 (Basic: ₹35,400), and Level 7: ₹22,450 (Basic: ₹44,900).
If we multiply the current minimum pension by potential fitment factors like 2.15, 2.28, and 2.57, the new pension amount could increase significantly. For a Level 7 employee, a 2.57 factor could mean a pension of ₹57,697. Note: These are just examples.
So, it's clear that if the 8th Pay Commission uses a 2.57 fitment factor (the same one used for the 7th Pay Commission), a Level 7 employee's minimum pension could jump from ₹22,450 to about ₹57,697-that's almost ₹58,000 a month.
But unions like the National Council – Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM), All India Defence Employees' Federation (AIDEF), and Bharatiya Pratiraksha Mazdoor Sangh (BPMS) are pushing for an even higher fitment factor. Some are aiming for a multiple of 3.8 to 4.
It's important to remember that these are just calculations based on possible fitment factors. The actual pension revision will depend entirely on the 8th Pay Commission's final recommendations and the central government's decision.
For now, both retired and current employees will have to wait for the official announcement to know exactly how much their retirement benefits will increase. These figures should only be seen as estimates.
