Ukraine's International Reserves Fell By 5% In August

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Ukrinform reports this, citing the National Bank of Ukraine.

“Ukraine's international reserves stood at $48,662.2 million as of September 1, 2026, according to preliminary data. They decreased by 5.0% in August. This decline was driven by a reduction in international financial assistance, while foreign exchange interventions remained at a level close to that of July,” the statement said.

Overall, several factors shaped the dynamics of international reserves in August 2026.

First, the NBU sold $4.85 billion on the foreign exchange market in August and purchased $0.5 million. Net foreign exchange sales amounted to $4.85 billion.

Second, the government's foreign currency accounts at the National Bank received $927.3 million in August, including $894.0 million through World Bank accounts and $33.3 million from other investors.

International reserves also increased by $1.63 billion after the government converted into hryvnias a corresponding amount of funds Ukraine had previously received from the European Union under the defense tranche of the Ukraine Support Loan program.

A total of $721.8 million was paid to service and repay public debt denominated in foreign currency, including $357.9 million to the World Bank and $288.7 million in interest payments on domestic government bonds denominated in foreign currency (OVDPs).

In addition, Ukraine paid $285.2 million to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

International reserves also increased by $752.0 million in August as a result of the revaluation of financial instruments and other factors.

The NBU concluded that the current level of international reserves is sufficient to finance 4.0 months of future imports.
