U.S. Exploring De-Escalation Measures - Zelensky
In his view, the weeks leading up to winter offer a chance for diplomacy. The President of Ukraine believes that Putin is counting on another harsh winter, while the Kremlin leader also does not want to enter into conflict with Trump ahead of the U.S. midterm elections.
“I have a feeling that Putin needs Trump. He does not want to upset him,” Zelensky said.

At the same time, the Ukrainian leader stressed:“Russia genuinely believes that this winter will help break us.”
According to him, Moscow hopes that a major winter offensive and attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure will deliver a“powerful blow” after which Ukraine will become“more inclined to compromise.”
Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine has already made every possible compromise and that any diplomatic process will require security guarantees and a package of economic support.
He also pointed out that Russia faces risks of its own ahead of the winter months. According to the President, Ukraine may also deal an economic blow to Russia.
“When they attacked our electricity infrastructure, we blocked their ability to sell oil and gas,” Zelensky recalled.

He nevertheless warned that disruptions to agricultural exports could lead to higher global food prices and cause instability in global food markets.
