Russian Agent Exposed In Mykolaiv Region
The investigation established that while serving in one of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' artillery brigades, the suspect helped direct Russian missile and drone strikes against neighboring units of the Defense Forces in the Mykolaiv and Odesa regions.
According to case materials, the suspect coordinated his activities remotely with an officer of the FSB's military counterintelligence service. He communicated with his Russian handler through an anonymous chat in a messaging app.
SSU cyber specialists uncovered his contacts with the Russian intelligence service, documented his espionage activities, and detained him at his duty station.
The investigation found that the soldier came to the attention of the FSB after he went AWOL from his military unit and began looking for easy ways to make money on Telegram.
After being recruited, the deserter returned to military service to carry out intelligence tasks, including secretly identifying the locations of logistics warehouses and concentrations of Defense Forces equipment.
The Russian side also sought to obtain personal data on the commanders of Ukrainian Armed Forces units engaged in combat on the southern front.
The agent collected the information for subsequent transmission to the FSB in the form of screenshots of Google Maps marked with Ukrainian military facilities.
During searches, investigators seized his smartphone containing evidence of his cooperation with the Russian intelligence service.
SSU officers also carried out a comprehensive set of measures to protect Defense Forces personnel in the area targeted by Russian espionage.
SSU investigators charged the suspect under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – high treason committed under martial law.
The suspect is being held in custody without the right to bail. If convicted, he faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
