SAN JOSÉ, Costa Rica - The State Distance University (UNED) and SINAC-MINAE have officially initiated the application process to establish the Chirripó UNESCO Global Geopark, marking a milestone for Costa Rican conservation and sustainable tourism.

Land of Eternal Waters

Covering over 105,000 hectares and hosting Costa Rica's highest peak (3,822.6 m.a.s.l.), the territory preserves glacial valleys, moraines, and unique ecosystems. Its Cabécar name means“Land of Eternal Waters.”

Core Objectives
  • Tourism Diversification: Establishing geosite routes beyond the main peak summit.
  • Community Economy: Empowering local entrepreneurs and indigenous communities.
  • Conservation: Protecting geological structures through controlled tourist impact.
